Οταν προειδοποιείς τον κόσμο για τους κινδύνους που εγκυμονεί η μεταβολή των κλιματολογικών συνθηκών στον πλανήτη, σε αποκαλούν «άγιο». Οταν του εξηγείς τι πρέπει να κάνει για να σταματήσει την αλλαγή, σε αποκαλούν κομμουνιστή. Και να γιατί:

Οι επιστήμονες συμφωνούν ότι θα πρέπει να λάβουμε τα απαραίτητα μέτρα ώστε να μην αυξηθεί η μέση θερμοκρασία του πλανήτη περισσότερο από δύο βαθμούς Κελσίου, συγκριτικά με την προβιομηχανική περίοδο. Αν ανέβει περισσότερο οι πάγοι της Γροιλανδίας θα λιώσουν οριστικά, πολλά οικοσυστήματα θα καταρρεύσουν, δισεκατομμύρια άνθρωποι θα υποφέρουν από λειψυδρία και οι ξηρασίες θα θέσουν σε κίνδυνο την παγκόσμια προσφορά τροφίμων.

Σε νέα έκθεση που δόθηκε στη δημοσιότητα από τη Διακυβερνητική Επιτροπή για την Κλιματολογική Αλλαγή, περιλαμβάνεται και ένας πίνακας που συνδέει τα διαφορετικά ποσοστά περικοπής των αερίων που προκαλούν το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου με την πιθανή αύξηση των θερμοκρασιών. Για να μην υφίσταται, ωστόσο, πιθανότητα περαιτέρω κλιματικής μεταβολής, θα πρέπει παγκοσμίως να περιοριστούν έως το 2050 οι εκπομπές αυτών των αερίων στο 15% των επιπέδων του 2000. Μελέτησα την παραγωγή διοξειδίου του άνθρακα το 2000 και τη διαίρεσα με τον σημερινό πληθυσμό της Γης και ανακάλυψα ότι καθένας μας παράγει 3,58 τόνους διοξειδίου άνθρακα. Περικοπή κατά 85% –όσο πρότεινε ο Βρετανός πρωθυπουργός Γκόρντον Μπράουν– σημαίνει ότι εφόσον παραμείνει σταθερός ο πληθυσμός της Γης, η κατ’ άτομο παραγωγή πρέπει να μειωθεί έως το 2050 σε 0,537 τόνους. Σήμερα, όμως, η παραγωγή στη Βρετανία ανέρχεται σε 9,6 τόνους κατά κεφαλήν και στις ΗΠΑ σε 23,6 τόνους. Για να φτάσουμε λοιπόν στους 0,537 τόνους θα πρέπει να μειωθούν οι εκπομπές κατά 94,4% στη Βρετανία και 97,7% στις ΗΠΑ. Ομως, είναι βέβαιο ότι ο πληθυσμός της Γης θα αυξηθεί. Αν, λοιπόν, φτάσουμε τα 9 δισεκατομμύρια ψυχές επί της Γης, οι περικοπές θα πρέπει να φτάσουν στο 95,9% στη Βρετανία και σε 98,3% στις ΗΠΑ.

Είναι βέβαιο ότι αριθμοί που έδωσε στη δημοσιότητα η Διακυβερνητική Επιτροπή είναι παλαιοί και δεν ανταποκρίνονται στη σημερινή ζοφερή πραγματικότητα. Αλλωστε, δεν έχει συνυπολογιστεί η αντίδραση της βιόσφαιρας στην υπερθέρμανση του πλανήτη. Τα θαλάσσια ύδατα, όταν θερμαίνονται, απελευθερώνουν διοξείδιο του άνθρακα, όπως και τα βακτήρια στο έδαφος. Επίσης, σύμφωνα με μελέτη που δημοσιεύθηκε στο Geophysical Research Letters, ακόμα και αν περικοπεί κατά 90% η εκπομπή των αερίων που προκαλούν το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου, δεν θα καταφέρουμε να συγκρατήσουμε την αύξηση της θερμοκρασίας ώστε να μην ξεπεράσει τους δύο βαθμούς Κελσίου. Για να τη συγκρατήσουμε στον 1,5 βαθμό, θα πρέπει να περικοπούν ολοκληρωτικά όλες οι εκπομπές των αερίων που ευθύνονται για το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου. Κάτι τέτοιο δεν είναι αδύνατο να επιτευχθεί. Είναι δυνατόν με τις κατάλληλες προσεγγίσεις και την τεχνογνωσία και τεχνολογία που διαθέτουμε να χρησιμοποιούνται αποκλειστικά εναλλακτικές μορφές «καθαρής» ενέργειας. Μοναδική εξαίρεση αποτελούν τα αεροπορικά ταξίδια. Κατά συνέπεια πρέπει να κλείνουμε και να μην επεκτείνουμε, όπως γίνεται τώρα, τα υπάρχοντα αεροδρόμια.

Το Πρωτόκολλο του Κιότο, η αντικατάσταση του οποίου συζητείται αυτές τις ημέρες στο Μπαλί, απέτυχε. Από την ημέρα που υπεγράφη καταγράφεται αύξηση και επιτάχυνση των παγκόσμιων εκπομπών αερίων ενώσεων του άνθρακα και η ταχύτητα παραγωγής διοξειδίου του άνθρακα έχει ξεπεράσει τις χειρότερες προβλέψεις της διακυβερνητικής επιτροπής.

Οπως αναφέρθηκε σε διάλεξη στη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Μηχανολογίας, τον περασμένο Μάιο, αναπτυξιακοί ρυθμοί της τάξης του 3% συνεπάγονται τον διπλασιασμό της οικονομικής δραστηριότητας εντός 23 ετών. Οταν ο αναπτυξιακός ρυθμός είναι 10%, χρειάζονται μόλις επτά χρόνια για τον διπλασιασμό. Αν, λοιπόν, ο αναπτυξιακός ρυθμός της οικονομίας μας φτάνει το 3% από σήμερα μέχρι το 2040, θα καταναλώσουμε οικονομικούς πόρους ίσους με το σύνολο των καταναλωθέντων από τη στιγμή που ο άνθρωπος εμφανίστηκε στη Γη. Εν συνεχεία κατά την περίοδο 2040 και 2063 θα διπλασιάσουμε και πάλι και τη συνολική μας κατανάλωση. Διαβάζοντας τη μελέτη αντιλήφθηκα τι πραγματικά πρέπει να καταπολεμήσουμε.

Μην απελπίζεστε, όμως. Πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσουμε αυτές τις προκλήσεις όπως στο παρελθόν αντιμετωπίσαμε τις δυνάμεις του ναζιστικού άξονα. Αν είχαμε τότε παραδοθεί, όπως πολλοί μας προέτρεπαν, σήμερα θα διαβάζατε αυτό το άρθρο στα γερμανικά. Πολλές φορές κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου πιστέψαμε ότι ήταν αδύνατο να νικήσουμε, αλλά δραστηριοποιηθήκαμε, είδαμε να γίνονται εκπληκτικά πράγματα. Η αμερικανική οικονομία πραγματοποίησε μία ιδιαίτερα δύσκολη στροφή το 1942, καθώς όλες οι βιομηχανίες ρίχθηκαν στην πολεμική παραγωγή. Η πολιτεία ανέλαβε διευρυμένες εξουσίες συγκριτικά με το παρελθόν και πράγματα τα οποία θεωρούνταν ανέφικτα υλοποιήθηκαν. Τα πραγματικά θέματα στο Μπαλί δεν είναι τεχνικά ή οικονομικά. Η κρίση που αντιμετωπίζουμε απαιτεί σοβαρή φιλοσοφική συζήτηση. Πρέπει να επαναπροσδιορίσουμε ποιοι είμαστε και τι σημαίνει η πρόοδος. Τέτοιες συζητήσεις δεν μας κάνουν ούτε άγιους ούτε κομμουνιστές. Δείχνουν μόνον ότι καταλάβαμε τι μας λένε οι επιστήμονες.
